Backyard Ecotopia has been created through an alliance of many private companies, government agencies and non profit organizations to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly landscape and gardening practices that every homeowner can use in their back yard. The four themes of Backyard Ecotopia are energy conservation through smart landscaping and products, attracting desirable wildlife by creating habitat with the right plant material, water conservation with permeable paving and water retention features, and recycling of household waste through composting, as a way to increase soil fertility and increase plant health, as well as a means to reduce waste going to a landfill site. Backyard Ecotopia illustrates how our lifestyles are linked to the greater environment around us and that as gardeners; we play an important role in the environmental health of our communities through sustainable gardening practices.
